Drill Objective

Gaining numbers advantages is a key aspect of smart basketball.  Taking advantage of these situations is the difference between winning and losing.  The fast break is when a team will get the opportunity to get hese number up situations such as 3 on 2 and 2 on 1.  This drill will give the player repetitions in these situations.

Drill Setup

The entire court with three lines on one baseline.

Drill Instructions

Using the entire court put three lines on one baseline and two players on the opposite end.  The three begin with the ball and attack the two on the other end trying to score the ball.  Once the play ends the offensive player that shoots or turns the ball over sprints back and becomes the defender while the other two offensive players stay and become the next two defenders.  The previous two defenders now attack the opposite basket against the single defender in a 2 on 1.

Drill Variations

Any numbers will work.  You can start with a 4 on 3 which transitions to a 3 on 2 coming back.  Play with fouls and make the players take free throws.  Make the drill where the players only get one dribble per touch or even no dribble at all.

Drill Coach Points

Focus on quick passing and movements.  Attack quickly otherwise in a game situation the defenders will catch up and stop the fast break.  Ask for deception.  Do not make it obvious where you are going to pass.  Encourage the players to go to the basket.  Do not settle for the long jumpshot.  Defensively, stop the ball and try to delay the fast break.
