Basketball Rebounding Drills

These basketball drills will focus on rebounding, boxing-out, and other aspects of rebounding.

Control the boards and chances are you'll control the game. The following basketball rebounding drills will prepare your team both mentally and physically to control the boards. Since rebounds lead to more high-percentage shots, rebounding is one of the most important aspects of coaching youth basketball. Defensive rebounding will limit the amount of shots taken by your opponent. Where offensive rebounding leads to more shots taken by your team.

Some important aspects of rebounding in basketball are:

  • Attitude - toughness and aggression; Positioning - read the flight of the ball and predict how to position body to box-out;
  • feet positioning - position feet to form a strong base - feet shoulder width apart, low position with knees bent, hands up;
  • body positioning - body should be used to move their opponent out of the rebounding position;
  • catching at the highest point - explode toward the ball and catch at it's highest point;
  • landing - protect the ball once the rebound is secure, look for an outlet.
