Everybody loves to score, but good defense is an inevitable part of any succesful team in basketball. When starting to intensify your skills with basketball there are a number of factors in defense that you must focus on.   Here are five basic ideas/areas you should focus on to improve your defensive game.

1. Good transition.  Beat your man back down the court eveytime and get in a good defensive position.

2. Focus on quick hands and quick feet.  Always be moving and have your hands ready.

3. Anticipate your opponents next move.  Be in the passing lanes to make the game difficult for the other team.  Anticipate where your man wants to go and what he wants to do and work to keep them from it.

4. Communication.  Always be talking and giving information to your teammates. Be ready to help them out if they are in trouble.  The more information you and your team shares the easier it is to be prepared and in good defensive positions.

5. Effort.  Bottom line defense takes effort.  Everyone loves to score, but good energy on the defensive end will make the difference between a succesful team and a losing team.
