This basketball drill focuses on the pick and roll move in basketball. The pick and roll is an offensive play in basketball in which a player of the attacking team creats a pick for the ball handler to slip by, the pick player then rolls out towards the ball handler who then receives a pass and attempts to get the shot off.




Description
This basketball drill focuses on the pick and roll move in basketball. The pick and roll is an offensive play in basketball in which a player of the attacking team creats a pick for the ball handler to slip by, the pick player then rolls out towards the ball handler who then receives a pass and attempts to get the shot off.

Setup
  1. Set up in a 2v1 to isolate the pick and roll.
  2. The ball handler starts beyond the key with a ball in hand and a defender defending the ball handler.
  3. The 2nd attacker should start in a spread out position around the 3 point line.
  4. The 2nd attacker will be the player setting the pick for the ball handler.
  5. The pick should allow the ball handler to slip into open space towards the outside of the free-throw line.


Instructions
  1. Have the ball handler dribble towards his defender.
  2. The pick player should set a strong, balanced pick allowing the ball handler to slip past his shoulder into open space.
  3. The ball handler should rub shoulders with the pick player to not allow the defender to cut between the two players.
  4. The ball handler should then take 2-3 dribbles to get seperation from the defender off the pick.
  5. The pick player then rolls out towards the basket while turning towards and facing the ball handler. Opening up towards the ball handler will allow the pick player to have good vision of the play and be ready for the incomming pass.
  6. The ball handler then passes to the pick player who then does a layup.
     

Variations
  • Add more players to make it more game like.

Coaching Points
  1. Make sure the pick player establishes the pick prior to the ball handler trying to cut past the pick.
  2. The pick player should be in a strong, balanced stance and standing still.
  3. The ball handler should rub shoulders of the pick in order to not allow space between the pick.
  4. The ball handler should get space and seperation from the defender.
  5. Pick player rolls out towards the ball handler.
  6. Ball handler performs a good solid pass to the pick player.
  7. Pick player has a good layup and scores the basket.
