Sometimes coaches try too hard to come up with basketball fitness and strength drills for their players. I have found it is best to just go old school and do what has worked for years.

Sometimes coaches try too hard to come up with basketball fitness and strength drills for their players.  I have found it is best to just go old school and do what has worked for years.  Sure you want to mix it up and keep things fresh for your players.  Mix in new fitness stuff where possible, and of course do not ignore the weightroom, but good old fashioned running bleachers and running court sprints can't be beaten for basketball fitness and strength work.

Running bleachers are wonderful for leg strength and endurance.  Do not just run them regularly.  Hop on two feet, hop on a single foot. Run at angles.  Again mix it up so your players don't get bored. Leg strength and jumping ability will be enhanced greatly.

Running sprints on the court are wonderful.  Full court sprints, such as having to make 5 down and backs in a minute, build stamina.  Shorter sprints, such as free throw line and back, work on agility and accelleration.  Combine them both, free throw line and back then midcourt and back etc, adds all aspects.

So remember, in a day and age of newfangled workouts, sometimes it is best to go old school and do what has worked best for years when working on basketball fitness.  Mix it up and keep it fresh and challenging for your players.
